Lost Venues Event: Help Map Liverpool’s Musical Heritage
Liverpool has always been a city where music thrives – but what about the venues of the past, the places where unforgettable gigs, legendary nights, and formative scenes once lived?
As part of the British Science Festival, the Institute of Popular Music at the University of Liverpool, invites music fans, musicians, venue owners, promoters and researchers to join the Lost Venues event at Kazimier Garden on Thursday 12th September.
Starting at 12 midday and running on a drop-in basis throughout the afternoon, this unique event is designed for anyone who has engaged with Liverpool’s music scenes over the years and can help shine a light on the city’s historic venues. Whether you were on stage, working behind the bar, promoting the shows, or simply part of the crowd, your memories and insights will help us crowdsource knowledge of Liverpool’s heritage venues.
Walking Tours of Ropewalks
As part of the event, there will be two free walking tours of the Ropewalks area at 5:30pm and 6:00pm (first come, first served). These tours will guide participants around sites of former music venues, sparking conversations about their history and significance.
Why This Matters
The Lost Venues event builds on the Music Board’s ongoing work with the University of Liverpool to develop the Liverpool City Region Venues Map. Launched in 2022, this comprehensive resource showcases the region’s thriving live music ecosystem and is already proving invaluable for audiences and musicians seeking out venues and gigs.
The map highlights nearly 600 active venues across the region, providing detailed insights such as venue type and transport connections. By expanding this project to include heritage venues, we can ensure that Liverpool’s rich cultural history is not only remembered but made accessible for generations to come.
